Project – Old Ningo

  • Old Ningo is a poor fishing port located at 70 kilometers from the center of Accra in the direction of Lomé, capital of Togo.
  • The project consists of building:
    • A school for 120 children (four classrooms, principal office, secretariat and library, in addition to space for cooking and dining)
    • Children’s housing (two separate communal rooms for boys and girls from the streets of Accra)
    • Housing for volunteers and school staff
    • Toilets and bathrooms.
  • The objectives of this project are:
    • Take children from the James Town school away from the streets who do not live with any family members, providing them with a safe environment, away from violence, abuse and street drugs.
    • Provide the children of this por region with the possibility of studying, so that they are not forced to move to the streets of downtown Accra.
    • Motivate more European volunteers to help these children, because, in the project, they will be given a room to live in, while they are in the period of volunteering.
    • Create regular income for the NGO, since the volunteers, in addition to paying a little for their support in Ghana, once they return to their countries of origin, contribute to the promotion of the NGO among their friends.
    • Considerable savings in all aspects, since in a rural environment the standard of living is lower and everything is cheaper.
  • One of the most important aspects of this project is that it is being built by the men and women of the area. They do this because of the enthusiasm they have for their children to have a place to study and also to receive a basic salary for their subsistence.

Project Phases:

  • PHASE I: THE SCHOOL. The plans were prepared by an architect and have already all the state permits necessary for its construction.
    • Phase I consists of building 6 classrooms, an office, a small kitchen and two bathrooms. Initially two of these rooms will be used for the volunteers’ room.
    • The construction is being carried out with materials bought in shops in the area and, as we mentioned, it is being executed by men and women of the town, under the necessary supervision.
    • All foundations have been completed, the septic tank is being built and the walls are quite advanced.
    • The next steps are to finish the walls, put the ceilings, level the floors, lay the floor, the windows, doors and, finally, perform the electricity and plumbing works.
    • To this must be added the provision of “sweet” water to the school. Fortunately, the land has a “sweet” water source
    • From that moment the school will be ready and it will only be necessary to furnish and decorate it.
  • PHASE II: HOUSING.
    • Once the school is completed, the construction of the homes of the children, personal housing and international volunteering that visits us every year will begin. It is intended to accommodate a maximum of 120 children and 6 volunteers at the same time.
  • Phase III: LIBRARY AND WORKSHOPS.
    • The last phase of the project will adapt one of the classrooms, which are being built today to have a library, workshops for handicraft workshops and a large terrace / stage that will be used for cultural and social events, such as dance concerts and traditional African music.
