James Town School

  • 90 children from the streets of Accra from 4 to 16 years old.
  • Non-formal basic education, with the purpose of preparing them to integrate the formal school.

  • 6 employees: 4 professors, one for each level of studies, one assistant professor and one cook. They also have partial employees for some extracurricular activities.
  • One of the basic characteristics of this school is to keep the help of international volunteers, usually young people from Europe.
  • Non-formal education at school:
    • Basic level – These are boys and girls who have never been to school, they learn English and numbers for the first time.
    • Intermediate level – These children learn two levels of the compulsory basic subjects
    • Advanced level – These children are prepared to integrate them into the formal public school.
    • Extracurricular activities – Music, soccer, handicrafts and holiday activities to get them away from the streets
  • Formal education – Universal Wonderful Street Academy is supporting 45 children in formal public school.
